For parents of young learners
My child mixes Hindi and English: is it okay?
"Mumma, I want to go bahar." Many Indian children mix Hindi and English in one sentence. This is normal for children who hear two languages, and it is not a sign of confusion. With a little practice, children learn to keep each language separate when they need to.

Why children mix languages
- They know the word in one language but not yet in the other.
- Families mix languages too, so it sounds natural.
- The Hindi word is quicker or carries more feeling.
- They are thinking fast and grab the first word that comes.
8 ways to help, gently
- Recast: if your child says "I want pani", reply "You want some water? Here you go."
- Have short English-only times, like dinner or the drive to school.
- Teach the missing words: keep a family list of words your child often says in Hindi.
- Read English picture books aloud every day and talk about the pictures.
- Play "English only" games for five minutes: I spy, twenty questions, shop-shop.
- Praise full English sentences specifically: "You said that whole sentence in English!"
- Keep Hindi strong too. Being good at two languages helps a child, it doesn't hurt.
- Never laugh at or scold mixing; it makes children stop speaking.

No. A strong home language supports learning a second one. Add English through books, games and short English-only times.
How do I stop my child mixing languages?
Don't stop it with scolding. Recast the sentence in full English, teach the missing words and give regular English practice.
