Show and tell ideas for kids, with sample scripts

Show and tell is often the first time a young child speaks in front of the whole class. Holding something they love makes it easier. Here are 40 ideas, a 4-line script any child can learn, and tips for a happy, confident turn.

The 4-line show and tell script

  1. Hello: "Good morning, everyone. My name is ___."
  2. What: "Today I have brought my ___."
  3. Describe: colour, size, shape, or where it came from (one or two lines).
  4. Why: "I like it because ___. Thank you."

Sample scripts

My teddy bear (UKG)

Good morning, everyone. My name is Anaya. Today I have brought my teddy bear. His name is Coco. He is brown and very soft. I like him because I hug him when I sleep. Thank you.

A seashell (Class 1)

Good morning, everyone. My name is Kabir. This is a seashell. I found it on the beach in Goa. It is white and pink, and it is hard and smooth. If you hold it to your ear, it sounds like the sea! I like it because it reminds me of my holiday. Thank you.

My paper plane (Class 2 or 3)

Good morning, everyone. Today I will show you a paper plane I made with my father. We used one sheet of paper and folded it seven times. The pointed nose helps it fly straight, and the wings help it glide. My best flight went from the sofa to the kitchen door! I like it because I made it myself, and now I want to learn how real planes fly. Thank you.

Tips for parents

  • Let your child choose. They speak best about something they love.
  • Practise holding it up. Show it to the class at chest height, then look at the friends.
  • Play "teacher" at home. Sit in a row with family and ask one easy question at the end.
  • Praise the brave part, not just the words: "You looked at everyone. Wonderful!"

Next steps: self-introduction for kids, 1-minute speeches and, if your child is shy, helping a shy child.
