CVC words for UKG and Class 1: word lists, blending tips and games

CVC words are the first words most children learn to read: three letters, three sounds, like cat, pen and sun. Below are CVC word lists for every vowel, word families, a simple way to teach blending at home, and games that make practice fun.

What is a CVC word?

CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. In a word like cat, c is a consonant, a is the vowel, and t is another consonant. Each letter makes its own sound, so children can read the word by saying the three sounds and joining them: c-a-t, cat. This joining is called blending.

Children are usually ready for CVC words in UKG or Class 1, once they know about 6 to 8 letter sounds, including at least one vowel.

CVC word families

Word families share the same ending, so once your child can read one word, they can read the whole family by changing the first sound. They are also great for rhyming games.

  • -at: cat, bat, hat, mat, rat, sat, fat, pat
  • -an: can, fan, man, pan, ran, van, tan
  • -en: hen, pen, ten, men, den
  • -ig: pig, big, dig, wig, fig, jig
  • -op: hop, mop, top, pop, cop
  • -ug: bug, hug, mug, rug, jug, tug

How to teach blending, step by step

  1. Start with oral blending. Before any letters, say the sounds and let your child guess the word: "I'm thinking of an animal: d-o-g."
  2. Touch and say. Write a CVC word. Your child touches each letter and says its sound, then sweeps a finger under the word and says it fast.
  3. Stretch it out. Some sounds can be held: "mmmaaat". Stretching keeps the sounds joined, which makes the word easier to hear.
  4. Change one letter. cat to hat to hit to hip. Changing one sound at a time builds real understanding instead of memorising.
  5. Read in a sentence. Once a few words are easy, read tiny sentences together: "The cat is on the mat." "The pig can dig."

If your child says the sounds correctly but cannot hear the word, go back to oral blending for a few days. It is the most common sticking point and it does pass with practice.

CVC games to play at home

  • Robot talk. Talk like a robot in sounds ("get your c-u-p") and let your child work out the word.
  • Word builder. Write letters on bottle caps or paper squares and build words together. How many words can you make with a, t, p, s?
  • Picture match. Draw or print pictures of a cat, sun, pig and bed, and match them to the written words.
  • Real or silly? Read words like "hat" and "zat" and decide which are real. Silly words check that your child is really blending, not guessing.
  • Hop and read. Write words on paper on the floor. Your child hops to a word and reads it.
