Long vowel words for kids
A long vowel says its own name: the a in rain, the e in tree, the o in boat. Many long vowel sounds are spelt with vowel teams, two or three letters that work together. Here are 100 words in 10 teams, with sentences to read.

An easy rule to start with: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." In rain, the a talks and the i stays quiet. It doesn't work for every word, but it helps with ai, ee, ea and oa.

How to practise at home
- Do one vowel team a day: read the words, then hunt for them in a storybook.
- Sort word cards into piles by vowel team.
- Underline the vowel team in each sentence before reading it.
- Play "I spy" with long vowel sounds: "I spy something that rhymes with rain."
